Perfect Motion at Plymouth Design Forum: A Deep Dive into the World of FutureDeluxe

Then came the main event – Marcus Chaloner. From the moment he stepped onto the stage, Marcus’ genuine passion and impressive grasp of his craft shone through. He took us on a journey right back to his roots in South Wales, revealing the surprising influence of mountain biking culture and the rather edgy layouts of “Dirt Magazine” in sparking his initial love for graphic design. This led to a self-taught adventure into web development with his project “Welsh Side” – proof that a bit of initiative can go a long way, and a skill that rather ironically helped him get into university.

Marcus then walked us through his early days in the fast-paced world of digital advertising at Glue London, where he really cut his teeth in motion design. This period was a melting pot of digital innovation and traditional production know-how, and his growing fascination with Cinema 4D was a clear sign of the direction he was heading.

The leap to freelancing allowed Marcus to really hone his focus on motion design, particularly the captivating world of photorealistic 3D rendering. He spoke about how game-changing GPU rendering was and the creative freedom he found in daily experimental projects he shared online. A real turning point came with the introduction and learning of Houdini, a bit of software usually reserved for massive VFX projects, which he creatively bent to his will to produce intricate ceramic designs – a testament to thinking outside the box and not being afraid to explore new tools.

This constant exploration eventually led him to the incredible team at FutureDeluxe back in 2019. He painted a picture of a studio that’s gone way beyond just motion design, now creating immersive experiences, mind-bending real-time installations, and even kinetic sculptures and anamorphic billboards.
