Michael Johnson at PDF: A Masterclass in Design, Purpose & Pivoting

Michael began by taking us back to the early days—when portfolios lived on glass slides, carried in a tiny box to client meetings, only for people to hold them up to the light rather than project them (“Did they bollocks,” as he put it). It was a reminder of just how much the design industry has changed—and how much his own path wound through false starts, firings and experimentation.

After eight jobs in three years, three firings and several countries (“I was effectively unemployable”), Michael founded Johnson Banks in 1992. His early work spanned the kind of print-led graphic design many of us recognise—beautiful, punchy, typographic, tactile. But even then, he began to feel a shift: making lovely things out of coloured paper wasn’t quite enough. There had to be “more than this.”

A turning point came in the aftermath of the 2011 Japan tsunami. As the world reeled, designers responded with… posters. Formally beautiful, emotionally sincere—but posters nonetheless. One raised around $30,000. Valuable, yes, but nowhere near the scale of what was needed. “Why are we faffing about raising £30k?” Michael asked. “We should be trying to raise 3 billion.”

That moment crystallised a major shift in Johnson Banks:
What if we only did great work for good people? Not for the man who ate all the biscuits. Not for meaningless fintechs. Not for greenwashers. But for organisations genuinely trying to change things.

This pivot shaped everything that followed, from charity campaigns to public information systems to large-scale philanthropic identities. His Cambridge University campaign alone went on to raise $3 billion. Design, he argued, can do far more than raise awareness—it can change systems.

One of the highlights was his explanation of elastic ideas; concepts strong enough to stretch across posters, events, identities, campaigns and experience design without snapping. His long-running Jodrell Bank and cultural science projects illustrated just how far a strong verbal idea can go.

During the Q&A, Michael tackled the big moral questions head-on. Would he work for a Russian brand during the war in Ukraine? “No,” he said bluntly. “You’ve got to have red lines.” He described turning down invitations, scrutinising clients for greenwashing, and sticking to the principle that Johnson Banks works for good people doing good things.

He also spoke about impact, scale and responsibility—not from a place of self-importance, but from lived experience: design choices can influence billions of lives when applied to systems, not just surfaces.

As always, the evening ended with a Q&A where good questions win gin (courtesy of Plymouth Gin) and this time; great questions win books. Three of Michael’s books and twelve bottles of gin left the building on the night. By the time the applause finally died down, it was clear why Michael Johnson remains one of the most respected figures in contemporary design. Not because of awards or prestige, but because he’s willing to ask the uncomfortable questions:

What is design actually for?
Who does it help?
What might happen if we aimed higher?

His work demonstrates that design doesn’t just decorate the world—it can shape it.

As the crowd spilled out to collect their limited-edition posters and continue discussions at the Dolphin, the atmosphere was unmistakable: inspired, energised, and just a little bit in awe.
